Peugeot have outlined ambitious plans to become the first company to win the Le Mans 24 Hours with a diesel car.

Champions in 1992 and 1993, the French manufacturer intends to return to the legendary 24-hour race in 2007, as well as the Le Mans Endurance Series.

Managing director Frederic Saint-Geours said: "I hope this will provide us with a fresh opportunity to demonstrate our ability to win."

Peugeot will confirm the details of their entry early next year.

The company, which will pull out of world rallying at the end of the season, enjoyed two impressive wins at Le Mans in the 1990s courtesy of the 3.5-litre V10-powered 905 sports car.

Peugeot dominated the now-defunct World Sports Car Championship in 1992, capping the year with success at Le Mans thanks to British drivers Mark Blundell and Derek Warwick and Frenchman Yannick Dalmas.

The following year, Peugeot returned to take all three positions on the Le Mans podium, with Australian Geoff Brabham sharing the winning car with Frenchmen Eric Helary and Christophe Bouchut.

The man who masterminded the wins was Frenchman Jean Todt, who has led the Ferrari Formula One team to their record-breaking success in the 21st century.

Saint-Geours added: "This is an extremely stimulating new challenge and I am convinced it will generate considerable interest throughout our staff and across our sales networks."
