Piquet Jr looks set to drive for his famous father's GP2 team |
GP2, the successor to Formula 3000, has detailed plans for its debut season. The Renault-backed series is slated to start at French Grand Prix weekend in April and will feature 12 teams in 24 races at 12 venues around the world.
The next tier down from motorsport's flagship series Formula One, GP2 will include six British-based outfits.
Brazilian Nelson Piquet Jr, who won the 2004 British Formula Three title, is certain to race after his father, a Formula One legend, entered a team.
"It has been quite difficult to make a choice between all the applications we have received over the past few months," said series chief Bruno Michel.
"But in the end we managed to select what I think will be a fantastic grid for 2005."
Qualifying will take place on the Friday of a Grand Prix weekend followed by a feature race on Saturday and a sprint race on Sunday.
