Briton Wheldon started from second on the grid |
Buddy Rice has become the first American to win the Indianapolis 500 since Eddie Cheever in 1998. Rice, driving a G-Force-Honda, was in the lead when rain forced the race to be halted on lap 180, 20 laps short of the scheduled distance.
Brazilian Tony Kanaan was second, ahead of Britain's Dan Wheldon in a race that was hit by a series of delays because of the weather.
Rice became the first winner from pole since Dutchman Arie Luyendyk in 1997.
