Biffle drives a Rouch Racing Ford |
Greg Biffle will be on pole for the Daytona 500 next Sunday after setting the quickest time in qualifying. He averaged 188.837mph around the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway in heavy headwinds.
Elliott Sadler, also driving a Ford, averaged 188.355mph on his best lap and will share the front row of the grid.
Under its unique rules, drivers vying for the other 41 spots in Nascar's biggest event take part in two 125-mile qualifying races on Thursday.
Biffle is a second-year driver on Nascar's top circuit, now called the Nextel Cup.
He won the 400-mile race at Daytona in July but had not previously been on pole in this series.
Two years ago he failed to qualify for the race after his engine blew up in a qualifying race.
"I never thought we'd be on the pole for the 500 this year," said the 34-year-old.
