Helio Castroneves was finally confirmed winner of May's Indianapolis 500 after an appeal by second-place finisher Paul Tracy was rejected on Wednesday.

Paul Tracy's Team Green challenged the result after he finished runner-up in the race on 26 May.

I wish that I could make them both happy with my decision but unfortunately that can't be the case
IRL president Tony George

Team owner Barry Green claimed that Tracy had passed winner Helio Castroneves on a yellow flag.

But after a two-hour hearing at IRL offices, and two hours of deliberations the race was awarded to Brazilian Castroneves.

Green said he had video evidence which showed Tracy completing his passing manoeuvre before the caution which he would present to IRL president Tony George.

But on Wednesday Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indy Racing League (IRL) president Tony George said that, after reviewing all the evidence the original result would stand.

In an 11-page ruling, George concluded that there were no grounds for an appeal because the positioning of cars under a yellow flag "is a judgment call and is not protestable nor appealable under the rule book".

George said: "To second-guess the officials either for calling a yellow caution or for their placement of the order of the cars is not allowed under the rules and for good reason.

"Judgment calls must be final, and that is the only way to conduct a motorsports race.

"I wish that I could make them both happy with my decision but unfortunately that can't be the case."

Under IRL rules Green can still file another appeal but has given no indication as to whether he will continue to dispute the decision.

Castroneves becomes the first back-to-back winner at the famed Brickyard since Al Unser in 1970 and 1971.

Final results from 86th Indianapolis 500 (drivers US unless stated):

1. Helio Castroneves (Bra), 2 hrs, 59 mins, 51 secs
2. Paul Tracy (Can)
3. Felipe Giaffone (Bra)
4. Alex Barron
5. Eddie Cheever
6. Richie Hearn
7. Michael Andretti
