Herbert chases twin glory
Johnny Herbert's Chevrolet Dallara
Herbert's attempts to qualify were scuppered by rain
Britain's Johnny Herbert will return to the Brickyard oval on Sunday for his final attempt at qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 before flying to California to continue his bid for the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

Herbert, driving a Chevrolet Dallara, failed to qualify during last weekend's qualifying sessions at Indy.

With both the final session of Indy qualifying and the Sears Point AMLS event taking place on Sunday, it was thought that Herbert would have to forego his attempts to take the lead in the ALMS.

However, Herbert will take a private jet to California to take over the Audi R8 for the closing stages at Sears Point.

Three attempts

Each driver is allowed three attempts at qualifying for the Indy 500. Thirty-three drivers qualified last weekend, with nine more spots available on Sunday.

"I lapped at over 227mph at Indy last Saturday but preferred to bid for a place on the grid the following day and the day's session was washed out with continuous rain," said the three-time Grands Prix winner.

"I want to do the Sears race because I can take the championship lead but also need to get on to the Indy grid - it's a dream I want to fulfil.

"There are nine places left and I'm confident I can claim one of them on Sunday.

"If I achieve that and things go well for (co-drivers) Andy Wallace and Tom Kristensen in the Sears race before I arrive to take over the Audi, I've a great chance of taking the lead in the ALMS championship.

"It's going to be an interesting few days."
