Sebastien Bourdais looked on course to move into the lead of the FIA Formula 3000 Championship until he lost control on the last lap of the event in Barcelona.

The Frenchman had led all the way from pole position but finally succumbed to race-long pressure from title rival Giorgio Pantano in the difficult Turn Three on the final tour.

Pantano shot through into the lead, while Bourdais recovered to finish third, behind Czech Tomas Enge.

Bourdais and Pantano now share second place in the championship behind leader Rodrigo Sperafico, who finished out of the points in seventh place.

Jimmie Johnson won his first Nascar Winston Cup race in only his 13th start.

Johnson led 62 of the 250 laps at the California Speedway to become only the ninth rookie winner in Nascar history.

Johnson benefited from a clever pit call during the final caution period, which was caused by a frightening crash on lap 229 of 250 involving Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Most of the lead cars pitted for tyres and fuel, but Johnson's Hendrick team opted to go for fuel only, getting their man out ahead.

Leading results from the 250-lap Nascar Winston Cup race at the California Speedway (US unless noted):

1 Jimmie Johnson Chevrolet 250 laps
2 Kurt Busch Roush Racing Ford - 250
3 Ricky Rudd Ford 250
4 Bill Elliott Dodge 250
5 Mark Martin Ford 250
6 Dale Jarrett Ford 250
7 Sterling Marlin Dodge 250
8 Rusty Wallace Ford 250
9 Dave Blaney Ford 250
10 Michael Waltrip Chevrolet 250

Leading championship positions in Nascar Winston Cup:
1 Marlin 1515 points
