Sebastien Bourdais, who scored his maiden victory in the series at Silverstone last year, fended off a 31-lap challenge from Brazil's Rodrigo Sperafico to win by just one second.

The duo finished well ahead of the chasing pack with Italy's Giorgio Pantano taking third spot more than 12 seconds adrift of the winner.

Sperafico, who won the season opener in Brazil, now leads the championship by six points from Bourdais, who started the race from pole position, his second in a row.

FIA Formula 3000 Championship, Imola, Italy

1 Sebastien Bourdais (Fra) Super Nova Racing 51mins 39.076 secs
2 Rodrigo Sperafico (Bra) Durango Formula at 1.085secs
3 Giorgio Pantano (Ita) Coloni F3000 at 12.641
4 Antonio Pizzonia (Bra) Petrobras Junior Team at 17.206
5 Patrick Freisacher (Aut) Red Bull Junior Team at 17.938
6 Tomas Enge (Cze) Arden International at 24.112

Michael Keohane broke his top-flight British Formula Three duck in style on Sunday, winning both races at Donington Park.

It was a superb response to his disappointing start to the campaign when he spun out in the first race and crashed in the second at Brands Hatch a fortnight ago.

In the first race, the Irishman overtook James Courtney, who started on pole, on lap 16 and stayed in front for the rest of the race.

He did it again in the second race - beating Australian Courtney off the line and never looking back.

Courtney, who has failed to win this season despite starting every race from pole, finished third in the first race after being passed by Bruce Jouanny and second in the second.

But his consolation was that he moved clear of Robbie Kerr at the top of the championship.

British Formula 3: Donington Park race one results

1 Michael Keohane
2 Bruce Jouanny
3 James Courtney

Race two:

1 Keohane
2 Courtney
3 Rob Austin

Bobby Labonte won his first Nascar Winston Cup race of the season with a little help from late-race caution flags at the Virginia 500.

Labonte pulled away from Matt Kenseth and Dale Jarrett as they battled for second on a restart with seven laps remaining.

He was assured of the victory when the caution flag flew again with two laps remaining in the 500-lap race.

Kenseth finished second in a Ford and Tony Stewart moved his Pontiac past the Ford of Jarrett for third. Dale Earnhardt Jr finished fifth in a Chevrolet.

Stewart set the pace for much of the race, but got caught behind Kenseth and Jarrett as they raced side-by-side.

That meant he was unable to challenge his Joe Gibbs Racing team-mate for the victory.

Leading results from the 500-lap Nascar Virginia 500 at the Martinsville Speedway (US unless noted):

1 Bobby Labonte Pontiac 500 laps 73.951mph

Olivier Beretta and Nicolas Minassian won the FIA Sportscar Championship race at Estoril in Portugal, making up for their disappointment in losing the previous event at Barcelona.

Beretta and Minassian were again the fastest car in the field, but this time they made it count.

They led a one-two-three for Judd-powered cars, leading home the Courage of Didier Cottaz and Boris Derichebourg and the Dome of Jan Lammers and Val Hillebrand.
