Zanardi's driving ambition
Former Formula One driver Alex Zinardi

Cart driver Alex Zanardi reveals details of his remarkable rehabilitation in an interview with BBC motorsport correspondent Jonathan Legard.

Former Formula One star Alex Zanardi is back behind the wheel just three months after a horrific high-speed crash nearly claimed his life.

Zanardi had both his legs amputated after the accident in a Champ car race in Germany.

But the Italian, who took his first steps walking on artificial limbs in October, has remained upbeat about his future.

He has not given up hope of a return to top-class motorsport.

And Zanardi told BBC Five Live how he drives himself on the 600-mile round trip between his Monaco home and a rehabilitation centre in Bologna.

The former Cart champion revealed he ultimately hopes to dispose of his crutches and get around unaided.

"I have to walk with just the muscles I've got left," he said.

"There is a particular technique to utilise the mechanical knees I have fitted.

"Eventually I will be able to get rid of the crutches and probably walk with no outside help and almost look to the outside like a normal person"

Zanardi said driving to his rehabilitation sessions was proving a great boost to his recovery.

"It's one of the things that make me think almost like nothing has happened," he said.

"To look in the mirror and look at my son sleeping in the back, and talking to my wife, is really very good.

"I know I won't be able again to do exactly the same things as I did before, but I'm trying very hard to do as many of the things as I was doing before."

He refuses to rule out a return to racing, but hopes to reach a point where the decision is his own.

"For me the most important thing, and the objective, is to arrive one day where I say it's my choice whether I race or not.

"If I reach that point then I'm going to be very happy.

"To race again and ago back into racing at a different level right now isn't really very interesting.

"I would like to go back and race the same kind of car I was racing before. It's very difficult, but never say never."

Despite his recovery, Zanardi still spent Christmas in hospital, visiting his wife Daniela who needed a spinal hernia removed.
