Cram praises British duo

BBC Sport's Steve Cram praises Mark Lewis-Francis and Daniel Caines for their efforts at the World Indoors in Lisbon.

It was fantastic to see both Daniel Caines and Mark Lewis-Francis doing so well at the World Indoors in Lisbon.

Caines, who took gold in the 400m, was unfairly dubbed favourite to win his race, which put him under extra pressure to win.

However, despite his tender years he took it all in his stride, running a superb tactical race to take the title.

He certainly has the capability to go right to the top.

He is strong-willed, possesses real character and so long as he is willing to keep on learning, he has a great future in the 400m.

The one real gem in the British camp in Lisbon was Lewis-Francis.

Unlike Caines, nobody expected him to even get a sniff at the medals and, once again, he proved us all wrong.

Weakest link

On Sunday, he showed the senior athletics world exactly why people have been talking about him with such excitement at junior level.

The frightening thing is, the 18-year-old looks more and more like Linford Christie everyday.

He has never been a great starter - in fact many would argue that this is the weakest part of his sprinting.

However, in the 60m - an event in which the start is crucial - Lewis-Francis clocked a lifetime best and walked away with a bronze.

Having analysed his character and technique it is hard to fault him. He has self-belief, a cool head, and every race he just seems to get better and better.

When you speak to him, it is hard to believe he is just 18-years-old.

Overall, both Mark and Daniel can be very proud of their achievements in Lisbon and I expect them both to have a wonderful summer in their respective distances.
