| Godina takes shot-put gold Godina adds the title to ones he won in 95 and 97 John Godina of the United States has won the men's shot-put gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. American Adam Nelson took the silver and Finland's Arsi Harju the bronze. Godina won the event with a throw of 21.87m, with Nelson's best effort a 21.24 while Harju threw 20.93. Godina stepped into the Olympic team last year, after 1999 world champion CJ Hunter withdrew, and responded by taking the bronze.
Hunter was subsequently banned for two years after a positive test for steroids. "I was watching them creeping up on me," Godina said. "I was wondering what was going to happen, especially with Adam still coming up." Godina was chasing his third world championship gold medal after winning in 1995 and 1997. "This one is very special because it is the first one in a very long time," he said. |
