Dick Pound, who quit his posts at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after losing last month's presidential election to Jacques Rogge, has agreed to return to one key position.

Rogge told athletics officials at a meeting on Friday that the Canadian lawyer would finish his mandate as head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAAF) spokesman Giorgio Reineri made the announcement after the meeting on the day of the start of the eighth World Championships.

Pound also quit as IOC marketing chief after accusing former president Juan Antonio Samaranch of working behind the scenes to get Rogge elected.

But the Belgian surgeon and former Olympic yachtsman has been determined to persuade Pound to return to the organisation.

Pound's mandate, however, will only run until the end of next year's Salt Lake City Winter Games.
