Safin leads Russian revolution
Marat Safin
Safin is spearheading the Russian charge
By BBC Sport Online's Steve Cresswell at Wimbledon

As far as tennis is concerned, the Russians are most definitely coming.

True, Marat Safin is the only Russian survivor at Wimbledon.

But the other youngsters around him in both the men's and women's game have shown at Wimbledon that their time may not be far away.

Mikhail Youzhny, 19, caused Pat Rafter enough problems in four sets of the fourth round to prompt the Australian to briefly believe that he was on his way out.

She (Anna Kournikova) makes the beauty of the tennis. She started it. Now tennis is very popular
  Lina Krasnoroutskaya
Lina Krasnoroutskaya, just 17, reached the last 16 before falling to former champion Conchita Martinez.

Elena Likhovtseva was making steady progress until coming up against Venus Williams in the third round, 12 months after having pushed Lindsay Davenport all the way in a three set match.

And add to that Elena Dementieva, 19, a semi-finalist at the US Open last year and Olympic silver medallist and it is clear to see that the Russians do not lack strength in depth.

Very popular

Krasnoroutskaya believes Anna Kournikova's emergence, albeit often dominating headlines for non-tennis reasons, has been crucial in boosting the sport's popularity in Russia.

"It's really good that we have Anna, especially for women's tennis.

"She makes the beauty of the tennis. She started it. Now tennis is very popular," said Krasnoroutskaya.

Mikhail Youzhny
Youzhny is a star in the making
"We have a lot of Russian girls, like seven in the main draw (at Wimbledon).

"I think that is very good for the country because we have a lot of fans. It makes tennis, you know, the most popular sport in Russia."

For Kournikova as an example in the women's game read Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the men's, according to Safin.

"We had Chesnokov and Volkov, but when they played it wasn't so big because we never won a Grand Slam tournament," said Safin.

"Then Yevgeny won in Paris in '96. It change completely, everything.

"Everybody started to go to the tennis and everybody was enjoying it a lot."

If Safin, last year's US Open winner, can get past Goran Ivanisevic into the last four at Wimbledon then Russian tennis will be given an even greater boost.
