![]() | Lloyd's last 16 verdict ![]() Can Federer ground Sampras' challenge? BBC commentator and former British number one John Lloyd gives his verdict on the last 16 matches in the men's singles at Wimbledon. Pete Sampras (US) v Roger Federer (Swi) Sampras: Age: 29; Seeding: 1; World ranking: 6 I'm going for Pete to win this but Federer is definitely one for the future. He's got so much talent that it's frightening but he lacks experience on grass and you can not say the same thing of Sampras. It would not surprise me if Federer managed to take a set off Sampras, but I can't see him winning three. Tim Henman (Gbr) v Todd Martin (US) Henman: Age: 26; Seeding: 6; World ranking: 11 Todd Martin should not present the same threat as he would have done a couple of years ago. He has been plagued by injuries recently and it has not been a good year for him. He is always good on grass though but I simply think that Tim will have too much for him and will go through to the quarter-finals. Marat Safin (Rus) v Arnaud Clement (Fra) Safin: Age: 21; Seeding: 4; World ranking: 3 I think Marat Safin could turn out to be a good grass-court player but he's not there yet.
Now he finds himself coming up against the better players he will need to be mentally strong. Goran Ivanisevic (Cro) v Greg Rusedski (Gbr) Ivanisevic: Age: 29; Seeding: n/a; World ranking: 125 This will be a tight game but I've gone on record as saying that Greg will win it. Greg seems to be full of confidence and belief at the moment, but this match will probably just come down to one or two points on tie-breaks. Goran loves Wimbledon and he is a popular figure but he could find Greg is just too good for him. Guillermo Canas (Arg) v Thomas Enqvist (Swe) Canas: Age: 23; Seeding: n/a; World ranking: 49 These two guys should not be in the last 16 of a grass tournament, but that is what happens when you have 32 seeded players. I expect Enqvist to come through because of his pedigree, but I haven't been particularly impressed with either of them during this tournament. Mikhail Youzhny (Rus) v Pat Rafter (Aus) Youzhny: Age: 19; Seeding: n/a; World ranking: 85 This is a dangerous match for Rafter. I saw Youzhny beat Andy Roddick at Queens and he is an old-fashioned grass court player. He chips and charges a lot and though he doesn't have the greatest serve he does back it up well with the rest of his play. I would probably go for Rafter to win through but I think it could be a close game. Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) v Nicolas Escude (Fra) Hewitt: Age: 20; Seeding: 5; World ranking: 5
But his run in the tournament should end here as Hewitt will have too much for him. The young Australian looked a bit tired during his match on Saturday but a day off should have allowed him to recharge his batteries. Andre Agassi (US) v Nicolas Kiefer (Ger) Agassi: Age: 31; Seeding: 2; World ranking: 2 I just can't see how Kiefer can hurt Agassi in this match. He doesn't have a big serve and will not be able to hit Agassi off the court. Agassi will also be good enough to beat Kiefer from the baseline. So where is Kiefer going to get enough points to win the match? The answer is that he's not going to. |
