Capriati battles into last 16

American Jennifer Capriati was made to struggle for her win over Russia's Tatiana Panova in a scrappy encounter on Centre Court.

The Australian and French Open champion was under the cosh from the start, losing her service game in the opener.

But she believes the delay caused by the earlier rain interruption and the windy conditions will prepare her for later in the tournament.

"It reminds me that I'm here playing at Wimbledon. These are what the day are like," said Capriati. "You have to menatlly prepare yourself for these kind of days, just kind of waiting around."

Panova's slow game was not to Capriati's liking, although the Russian herself was also not a fan of the American's pacier approach.

Capriati managed to break back in the fourth game which was closely followed by two more breaks of serve from both players.

The American finally found her rhythm in the 10th game, with the help of poor serving from the Russian, to take the first set.

It seemed as if Panova was set on causing one of the upsets of this year's Wimbledon, by racing into a 4-1 lead in the second set.

But back came Capriati, again with the help of often atrocious serving from Panova, to level the score and then break Panova again in the 10th for the match.

"I had lapses of concentration," added Capriati. "On days like this, you feel very lethargic. That's the way I kind of felt out there.

"I had a slow start, but I turned it up at the end. I was happy the way I finished it."
