Rusedski was in top form against the Spaniard
Greg Rusedski beat Juan Carlos Ferrero (8) 6-1 6-4 6-4

Greg Rusedski clinched a place in the last 16 with victory over the Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero and then declared that he had produced his best ever tennis at Wimbledon.

Ferrero is the world number four and seeded eighth at the Championships, but was all at sea against the Briton on the grass courts at SW19.

Rusedski's serve-volley game was dominant, but he was also winning games from the back of the court against the clay-court specialist.

The pair exchanged breaks at the start of the first set, but from there on the Briton took over.

To not let him (Ferrero) win serve once in a set is a good effort, even on grass

He raced through the first set 6-1, and not surprisingly he was delighted with the way he had started.

"I don't think I have played better here than in that first set. It was pretty immaculate except for the service break."

Ferrero was unable to hold his own serve once in the opening set.

Rusedski added: "I was pleased with my ground game and return of serve. To not let him win serve once in a set is a good effort, even on grass."

A single break in the second set when Ferrero double faulted was enough to give Rusedski a two-set lead.

The Briton again broke early in the third set and had four match points on the Ferrero serve at 5-3 in a game of eight deuces.

The Spaniard held on to force Rusedski to serve the match out, and that he did taking the last game to love for a confidence boosting win.

"It was the kind of performance I needed today so that I could get off court quick and save energy for next week," added Rusedski.

"Every game you have to improve and that is what I have done with every game I have had."

Rusedski meets Goran Ivanisevic in the last 16 after the Croatian beat Andy Roddick.
