The West Indies were 214 for nine wickets at close of play on day one in their first innings after winning the toss and deciding to bat in the Fifth Test against South Africa at Sabina Park on Thursday.

Allan Donald had made an immediate impact on his return to the South African side as the tourists took the early advantage.

Donald, who had missed the victory in Antigua with injury, struck with the first ball of the match as Leon Garrick suffered a first ball duck on his Test debut.

Donald added the wicket of Chris Gayle to leave West Indies 53 for three at lunch, with Brian Lara on seven and Marlon Samuels on three.

Brief debut

Garrick was only called into the Test squad the day before the start after scoring a century in a tour game against South Africa.

But he could not have had a briefer beginning to his Test career, cutting his first ball straight to Shaun Pollock in the gully.

The West Indies won the toss and decided to bat in the fifth and final Test against South Africa at Sabina Park on Thursday.

Donald had Gayle caught by Justin Kemp for 25 and then Jacques Kallis had Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught behind for seven to leave the home side in early trouble.

West Indies made two other changes - Marlon Samuels replacing Ramnaresh Sarwan and fast bowler Cameron Cuffy coming in for left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell.

Paul Adams returned to the South African team after an absence of 10 Test matches in place of fellow left-armer Nicky Boje, who returned home for a shoulder operation after the fourth Test.

West Indies: Carl Hooper (captain), Chris Gayle, Leon Garrick, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Brian Lara, Marlon Samuels, Ridley Jacobs, Dinanath Ramnarine, Mervyn Dillon, Cameron Cuffy, Courtney Walsh.

South Africa: Shaun Pollock (captain), Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Daryll Cullinan, Neil McKenzie, Mark Boucher, Lance Klusener, Justin Kemp, Allan Donald, Paul Adams.

Umpires: Steve Bucknor (WIs), Srinivas Venkataraghavan (Ind)
Match referee: Mike Denness (Eng)
