South Africa put themselves in a position to win the series against West Indies after extending their lead to 229 at stumps on the third day of the fourth Test in Antigua.

The tourists finished the day on 122 for three having bowled the West Indies out for 140, claiming their last six wickets for just 14 runs.

South Africa's would have been further ahead were it not for some fine containment from West Indian legspinner Dinanath Ramnarine.

South Africa were able to score only 72 runs in 61 overs between lunch and the close before a late flurry of boundaries by Daryll Cullinan slightly spoilt his figures.

He finished the day with one for 21 in 25 overs.

Despite his disciplined performance, the South Africans remain firm favourites to take a winning 2-0 lead in the five-Test series.

No team has made more than 216 to win in the fourth innings in a Test in Antigua and the pitch was showing signs of deterioration with two days still remaining.

South African batsmen Herschelle Gibbs and Neil McKenzie were happy to pad the ball away on a day of agonisingly slow cricket.

In the 13 overs before tea, Ramnarine only conceded one run off the bat and five runs in total.

Gibbs faced 195 balls in making 45.

Ramnarine run out

He eventually fell to a Ramnarine delivery which bounced steeply from the rough.

Although the ball appeared to miss his bat and gloves, hitting his shoulder, he was given out caught at slip.

Left-hander Nicky Boje replaced Gibbs but was out second ball to West Indian captain, off-spinner Carl Hooper, when he edged an attempted big hit to slip.

McKenzie batted through to the close, scoring 44 not out off 183 balls with three fours.

South Africa bowled out the West Indies for 140 in the first hour of the day, conceding just ten runs for the last four wickets.

Hooper was caught at short leg for 17, adding only one to his overnight score.

New cap Neil McGarrell was trapped lbw for nought and Ramnarine was run out for two by a direct hit by McKenzie from midwicket.

Bowler Shaun Pollock impeded Ramnarine briefly as he went for the ball and the batsman was well short of his ground as McKenzie's throw hit the middle stump.

Pollock trapped last man Courtney Walsh lbw after Walsh glanced a four, the only runs conceded by Pollock in 6.1 overs.

Pollock finished with two for 25 and Lance Klusener had figures of three for 15.

West Indies suffered a further blow when South Africa started their second innings.

Fast bowler Mervyn Dillon sent down only three balls before telling Hooper he could not complete his over because of what the West Indian management said was a sprained right thumb.
