Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Mervyn Dillon both fell just before the close on the second day as South Africa gained the upper hand in the fourth Test.

The home side had been comfortable at 126 for four - 121 behind the Proteas first innings score - but they closed the second day on 130 for six.

Chanderpaul and captain Carl Hooper were making solid progress, when the young left-hander edged Justin Kemp to Daryll Cullinan at first slip.

Dillon came in as nightwatchman, but he went for a duck in the next over as Lance Klusener ripped his off-stump out of the ground.

Brian Lara had looked in brilliant form until he was superbly caught by Neil McKenzie off Kemp for 19, to leave the home side struggling at 50 for three.

Openers Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds had both fallen cheaply.

Gayle fell first, for 11, as he edged a wide delivery from Jacques Kallis to Shaun Pollock at wide fourth slip.

Hinds fell soon after for nine as he cut a straight delivery from Pollock into the gloves of Mark Boucher.

Ramnaresh Sarwan survived being caught off a no-ball before playing positively to reach 25.

But then he hooked a Kallis bouncer to Nicky Boje, specifically set at backward square-leg.

Earlier South Africa had carried their overnight score from 200 for seven to 247 all out. Pollock finished on 48 not out as he ran out of partners.

The West Indies trail 1-0 in the five-match series.
