Courtney Walsh reached a landmark 500 Test wickets on Monday, by dismissing Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis on day three of the second Test against South Africa in Trinidad.

At the close of play, South Africa reached 130 for two, with Herschelle Gibbs (57) and Darryll Cullinan (41) steadying the ship with an unbeaten 92-run partnership, after Walsh's historic achievement.

Walsh, 38, took the new ball for the home side after they had earned a first innings lead of 56, thanks to an unbeaten 93 by wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs.

True to form, Walsh did not need long to grab his 499th, dismissing Gary Kirsten, caught behind for 22.

The crowd by now could sense that they were on the verge of seeing something miraculous.

Two balls later Kallis sealed his place in history falling leg-before for a duck to become Walsh's 500th victim - though TV replays later cast doubt on the decision.

A scene reminiscent of Brian Lara scoring his 375 against England during the 1993/1994 series took place, as the crowd became frenzied as they watched Walsh look up to the skies in relief and disbelief.

At the crease, Gibbs rode his luck and was dropped on 32 when Ramnaresh Sarwan dived but could not hold a blistering coverdrive off Nixon McLean.

The opener went on to complete his half-century after batting for 169 minutes, facing 133 balls and hitting nine fours, and along with Cullinan he will be looking to build upon South Africa's strong position.

Walsh's duck

West Indies began the day on 250 for seven and lost a wicket without addition as South African skipper Shaun Pollock bowled Dinanath Ramnarine for two.

But the tourists' hopes of wrapping things up in short order were frustrated as Mervyn Dillon proved solid in defence.

He was lucky when a top edged pull flew over the slip cordon for four, but kept Ridley Jacobs company for 29 overs as they added 71 runs.

It was a record for the ninth wicket in matches between the teams, beating the stand of 66 between South Africans Pat Symcox and Allan Donald at Port Elizabeth in 1998-99.

Jacobs reached his sixth Test 50 and proceeded to thump paceman Donald over mid-on for four.

He also benefited from a stroke of luck when the slips failed to react quickly enough after Kallis found the edge.

Dillon belied his lowly position in the order with a superb off-drive to the boundary but Ntini found the perfect delivery to bowl him for 21 with the last ball before lunch.

Jacobs missed out on a maiden century after a mix-up led to last man Walsh being run out for nought, the 42nd Test duck of his career.

Jacobs played some exhilarating shots as he sought to reach three figures before running out of partners, which he narrowly failed to do.

He crashed a full length delivery from Donald straight back past the umpire and, after surviving a run out scare when Nicky Boje's throw missed the stumps, clubbed two Ntini deliveries to the square leg fence.

But he was left high and dry three runs short of his best Test score of 96 not out against Australia when Walsh's dismissal brought the innings to an end.
