![]() | Parrott put on the spot ![]() The real QoS with Mark James (l) and Phil Tuffnell (r) By BBC Sport Online's Stuart Roach at Royal Lytham Question of Sport captain John Parrott had all the answers when Open fans put him on the spot at Lytham on Thursday. The snooker star was on hand to make the draw for the Famous Grouse Foursomes tournament and soon found himself on familiar ground as the sponsors invited the audience to quiz the BBC sports personality. Parrott was tested on sports ranging from snooker to horse racing - and, of course, golf - and then took on a string of challengers in a game of snooker on a two-foot table. "I try to visit the Open every year, no matter where it is played, and it is always nice meeting fellow golf fans," Parrot said, after coming through his question time relatively unscathed.
"The Open is a good social occasion and the hospitality tents offer some good respite for fans who have been out on the course for a few hours." "I'm just getting to know Lytham, as it's the first time I have been here, but I love the Open. "It's normally a case of pulling on your waterproofs and away you go."
Parrot spent the morning watching Colin Montgomerie's rise to the top of the leaderboard. And snooker's former world champion clearly believes the Scotsman has what it takes to stay out in front. "You don't win that many Order of Merits if you are not a good player and Colin is undoubtedly capable of staying out in front," Parrott said. "It might do him a favour if Mr Woods is not on his shoulder as I think Colin sometimes has a little too much respect for him. "That's easy for me to say from the sidelines, but I feel that all Colin has to do is concentrate on his own game to be in with a real chance of winning this."
Parrot had already come through his own big test of the day, though he was stumped by a number of tricky questions from the floor in the Famous Grouse tent. He failed to correctly identify Jack Haines as the only England player to have scored twice on his debut and then fail to win another cap. And if he doubted the authenticity of the answer, proof came when the questioner introduced himself as John Haines, the son of the man in question. Parrot had mixed fortunes with the remaining questions, including these five testers: (Answers at foot of page.) 1: Which Everton player was sent off when Everton were thrashed 5-0 by Liverpool? 2: In which year did Barnsley win the FA Cup? 3: Which golfer broke his leg during play in the 1998 Open? 4: What unusual event occured on the Saturday of the 1988 Open at Lytham? 5: Who is the leading goalscorer in World Cup finals history? Answers: 1: Glen Keely (Parrot answered correctly) 2: 1912 (Parrot wrong). 3: Richard Boxall (correct). 4: Play was rained off (correct). 5: France's Juste Fontaine (wrong). |
