Saga draws to a close
The last match at the Old Wembley saw German beat England 1-0 in October 2000
Wembley has been standing idle for more than a year
Wembley is expected to be confirmed as the site of England's new national stadium on Wednesday.

The Football Association will make the announcement at the same time as Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell gives the news to the House of Commons.

Paul Newman, head of communications at the Football Association, said: "There will be an announcement about the national stadium project on Wednesday.

"In the meantime, there will be no comment by any of the parties involved."

After months of discussions, the FA has turned down sites in Birmingham and Coventry and will go with the original design for Wembley, which was drawn up by Lord Foster.

The design was first unveiled in 1999 and features a massive arch in place of the old Twin Towers.

Lower cost

However, there will be several key changes to the original proposal, which was rejected as being too expensive and failed to find backing from City institutions.

It is believed that plans for a hotel and office complex have been removed in order to lower the cost.

Australian construction company Multiplex has also offered to provide much of the necessary funding.

In return, the firm will be offered a lease agreement on the stadium.

While the Government will not provide any money directly to the scheme, it is understood it will help with the cost of making changes to the transport infrastructure.

It is believed that the new stadium will also be able to host athletics as well as football and rugby league.
