| Dawson: Now it gets physical ![]() BBC Sport Online columnist Matt Dawson looks ahead to the Lions' toughest test yet - the match with Australia A on Tuesday. In a strange kind of way, being on a Lions Tour brings you back down to earth. It's like a new club environment. There are players who you know are going to be in the team and others you know that you're competing against. Every training session you are trying to impress. It's like going back to your first couple of years of club rugby. But that's part of the education of being on a Lions Tour and it makes you into a better player.
Everyone is focused on Tuesday's game, even those not in the 22. It's like an unofficial Test match and the Australians have been in a training camp for 10 days. It's going to be a very physical game after what happened on Saturday night. They (Queensland) quite obviously wanted to get stuck into us and the boys responded well by keeping their discipline. We've got to make sure that we do that again on Tuesday night. It's been a bit difficult week because of all the travelling and the changes in personnel, so the match with Australia A is going to be a real test. There are also first appearances for Lawrence Dallaglio and Mike Catt.
I felt sorry for Catty. He trained really well, then got a back injury. Trained really well again, then did his calf. He had been looking really sharp and he's had to take a bit of stick from the boys. But today was his D-day and he knew that if he did not come through training then he was pretty much on his way home. But he was fully fit today and he's going to be an integral part of the squad if he comes through the game all right. As far as dedication goes there is no-one better than Lawrence because the recovery he's made after such an injury is outstanding. He's been putting in extra training sessions morning, noon and night.
Before the tour, competition in the back row was going to be very competitive with everyone on form and that has remained the case. Lawrence is aware of that. He won't be going out there to try to upstage anyone, he'll go out and play his utmost best and make sure he shows the squad that he is fit. There is no doubting his ability and if he's on form its going to take a very good player to keep him out. |
