![]() | One under the belt ![]() BBC Sport Online columnist Matt Dawson reflects on a game of two halves and a performance that sets the benchmark for the rest of the tour. Make no mistake - the President's XV were a good side and there is a very good feeling in the camp after the hard start they gave us. They were powerful in midfield and a lot more competitive and physical than Western Australia, but if we continue to play that type of rugby it is going to be hard for teams to beat us. The second half attacking performance is going to be the benchmark for the rest of the tour. And at the other end when we lost our structure a bit early on our scramble defence was outstanding when it needed to be.
There were a lot of nervous players out there making their first appearances of the tour and I think people felt a bit under pressure having seen the boys win by so many on Friday. We turned a lot of ball over but to be fair we showed why we've been chosen as Lions as we reacted and played well in the second half. We've got a lot of pace - as Jason Robinson showed them only too well - and we've also got strength which was put to use. But credit must also go to the management who had obviously been watching the game very carefully and came in with some wise words at half time. We listened to what Graham Henry said and then it was up to me and Neil Jenkins to go out there and play the right game and that continued when Austin Healey came on. I enjoy that aspect of my rugby - the challenge of the game plan, reading and understanding the game. It was pleasing to get involved with the game, backs and forwards, and I also enjoyed gelling quickly with players around me.
And when he came on I had to adapt to Aussie who's a very different type of player to Jenks, but we all showed why we're on the tour in our handling of changing situations. Now my next challenge is to get into the Test side and I can't do anymore than I did against the President's men. I was absolutely knackered at the end and cramp had set well in with 10 minutes to go - but when you're playing with the Lions you just want to keep going. With 73 points in the second half we've put the cat amongst the pigeons and there are now 37 players fighting for places in the Test team. I want to get involved as soon as possible in the Saturday side as the Tests get closer so I can't enjoy too many beers after this win. We'll have a bit of rehab, probably in the pool, but then it's straight back to training and the hard work will continue. |
