"My plan was to get through the new ball, then hit the gaps and run hard. It was a matter of concentrating," said Waugh. Waugh was dismissed for five in the first game, bowled by Javagal Srinath as he made room to drive through the off side. "I tried to be more patient today," he said.
His brother Steve said batting second on a slow pitch with inconsistent bounce had been difficult. "The fielding was good, bowling satisfactory and batting excellent," said the Australian captain. "248 was very competitive. The important thing was the partnerships all the way through." Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly blamed his side's poor bowling was for their defeat. "We didn't put the ball in the right place," he said.
