| Laxman smashes Indian record ![]() Laxman adds more runs off Shane Warne's bowling Day Four, Second Test, Calcutta: India 171 and 589-4 (at close); Australia 445 Click here for scorecard Vangipurappu Laxman re-wrote the record books with the highest Test score by an Indian as the home side continued a remarkable recovery at Eden Gardens. Laxman finished the day unbeaten on 275 after surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's previous record of 236 not out as India built a commanding lead despite having been made to follow on. Australia's hopes of a 17th successive Test win faded as Laxman and Rahul Dravid produced a brilliant batting display. They batted throughout the day to take their partnership to 357, with Dravid 155 not out at the close. It was a new fifth wicket record for India, beating the stand of 214 between Mohammad Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri against England at the same venue in 1984. Laxman, who top scored in the first innings, became the first Indian to score 250 in a Test, collecting 44 boundaries along the way. The home side started the day on 254 for four, having been forced to follow on 274 runs behind.
The two batsmen were unfazed by the introduction of the second new ball and scored 51 runs in the first hour of play. Dravid, bowled by Warne in the first innings, hit back with three consecutive boundaries off the leg-spinner as he found form for the first time in the series. Laxman reached 150 off 233 balls with 27 boundaries, with Dravid's half century also arriving before lunch, which India reached on 376 for four. The Australian attack continued to flounder on a flat pitch following the interval and Laxman overtook his previous Test best of 167 with an off-driven four off Shane Warne. The leg-spinner was unable to slow the scoring rate and finished with figures of one for 152 from 34 overs. Laxman clocked off the next milestone when he passed 200 off 304 balls, with his boundary count having reached 35. Dravid was equally fluent and his ninth century in 42 Test appearances was duly reached with a four off Jason Gillespie. India lead by 315 with a day to play, but Australia will be confident of avoiding defeat against an attack minus its two senior bowlers, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top India v Australia stories: Links to top India v Australia stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
