The Test legend died on Sunday, aged 92, just two days before the start of the game in Mumbai.

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly ordered his players to toughen up after a crushing 10-wicket defeat by Australia in the first match of their three-Test series.

"We thought the best way to show respect to Sir Don was play top quality test cricket," Waugh said afterwards.

Adam Gilchrist was named Man of the Match for his innings of 122, made off only 112 balls with four sixes and 15 fours.

And Waugh paid his vice-captain the ultimate compliment.

"The way Gilchrist batted yesterday I am sure there were a few glimpses of how Sir Don used to play.

"It is as good a test win as I have ever been involved in," he added.

The three-day victory extended Australia's record Test winning streak to 16 and Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was unhappy that his team had proved a soft touch for the tourists.

"We were not tough enough. We have to show more resolve if we are to put up a better fight in the second and third Tests," Ganguly said.

"I thought the bowlers did well to bring us into the match after we were bowled out on the first day. But then Hayden and Gilchrist came and took the game away from us."

He added: "All's not lost yet. I am confident we will be much better in the next game."
