Parker Pen Shield review: Round Four

Neath put themselves back in contention for a quarter-final place in the Parker Pen Shield with a notable victory in Bourgoin in Pool Five on Sunday.

It took a magnificent 40-metre drop goal from Welsh international Lee Jarvis in injury-time to snatch a 27-25 victory, but it was no less than the visitors deserved.

The Welshmen, who had never won away from home in either the Heineken Cup or Parker Pen Shield in 16 previous matches, led 17-8 at half-time through tries from Dave Tuieti and Gareth Morris.

Morris crossed the line again but two Bourgoin tries brought the home side right back into contention and they took a 25-24 lead with eight minutes left to play.

But Neath did not panic and Jarvis came up with the match-winning score two minutes into injury-time to set up a mouthwatering clash with table-topping Bristol at The Gnoll in January.

Bristol maintained their unbeaten run with a 31-15 home win over Viadana.

But it was a struggle for the West Country side, who beat the Italians 42-16 the previous weekend but led only 6-5 at half-time.

However tries from David Rees and Spencer Brown after 70 and 72 minutes put Bristol in control.

Argentinian outside half Felipe Contepomi kicked four penalties and converted both those scores for a match tally of 16 points.

Adam Vander added a third try on the stroke of time to complete the scoring.

London Irish maintained their 100% record in Pool Six as they ran in 12 tries in a 76-10 triumph over Spanish side Valladolid.

Number eight Declan Danaher scored a hat-trick of tries while outside half Barry Everitt contributed 19 points with seven conversions and a touchdown.

With nearest rivals Dax running in 15 tries in their 94-19 home win over L'Aquila, it looks as though the final pool game between London Irish and Dax on 12 January will determine who goes through.

No fewer than 12 Dax players scored tries in their romp, with wing Rida Jahouer getting a hat-trick. Outside half Sebastien Fauque scored 17 points.

The other Spanish side in the tournament, Madrid 2012, fell 30-10 at home to Pau in Pool Two.

It was the French team's fourth successive win and, if they can beat Colomiers at home in round five, they should go through.

Charlie Hodgson

Sale Sharks kept up their 100% record in the Parker Pen Shield with a 44-6 thrashing of Irish side Connacht on Saturday.

Charlie Hodgson scored 14 points - a try, three conversions and a penalty - for Sale while centre Mel Deane added two more of the home side's seven tries.

Gloucester also kept up their 100% record as they beat Caerphilly 47-16 at Virginia Park.

Caerphilly put up strong resistance in the first half but after the interval Gloucester pulled away.

There were tries for Chris Fortey, Robert Todd, Junior Paramore, Dimitri Yachvili and Joe Ewens.

Ludovic Mercier added five conversions and four penalties while Caerphilly's two consolation tries came from Andrew Jacobs and Justin Thomas.

Roma went down 22-17 at home to Narbonne despite scoring three tries to their opponents' one.

Flanker Domenico di Luca scored two for the Italians with Leonard di Luia adding another.

Narbonne could only manage a penalty try, but three penalties from Cedric Rosalen and one from Pascal Bazini plus a drop goal from Alewyn Joubert edged the visitors to victory.

Tries from Jean-Philippe Viard, Thibault Privat and Pierre Mignoni carried Beziers to a 34-19 win over Overmach Parma. In Pool Three's other match,

Leeds battled hard but were beaten 28-16 by Pontypridd.

Full-back Brett Davey was the Welsh team's hero with 23 of their points, made up of seven penalties and a conversion.
