Scarlets coach Gareth Jenkins had set a target of seven tries to enable his men to maintain a challenge on Pool One leaders Leicester. But that target was reached by half-time, with Llanelli scoring 15 tries by the end of the match.
By the end, when Calvisano where left chasing shadows, Cardey had hoisted his tally to five, equalling the tournament record held by Gloucester's Tom Beim. More significantly, Llanelli's runaway total, one short of the record established by Toulouse, will give Leicester something to think about when Calvisano go to Welford Road in the new year.
The visitors at least left with the consolation of a sensational second-half try by full-back Paolo Vaccari from an interception inside his half. That score showed what Calvisano are capable of if given ball and a little space. The trouble was that pumped-up Llanelli, on a day when just about everything went their way, were not prepared to give them either. "We have aspirations," Jenkins said after the match. "Somewhere along the way you get a big try count. Now we've done that so we can concentrate on just wining the next two games. "We found out last year that you can't depend on anybody to do you any favours." Llanelli: Tries: C. Bowen, Cardey 5, Proctor 3, N. Boobyer, G. Evans 2, J. Davies, Wyatt, Booth. Cons: S. Jones 9.
