Two tries in the final three minutes gave Leeds Tykes an unlikely 30-27 Parker Pen Shield victory over Pontypridd at Headingley on Sunday.

The Welshmen dominated for long periods and, when Gareth Wyatt intercepted Dan Parks' long pass to score a try which Ceri Sweeney converted, they led by 11 points with just seven minutes remaining.

But Carl Hogg battered his way over from close range as the clock ticked into overtime.

Then James Ponton charged down Gareth Barber's kick from the base of a scrum just inside the Leeds half.

Parks took it on and fed Scott Benton, who raced away to score under the posts.

Parks added a third conversion to his three penalties and first-half try to send Leeds second in Pool Three and set up the prospect of a mouthwatering return in Wales next week.

David Rees

Bristol maintained their grip on the top of Pool Five with a 42-16 victory in Italy against Viadana, scoring four tries in the second half of a tempestuous game which saw five men sin-binned.

Bristol led 13-6 at the break, flanker Adam Vander grabbing the opening try.

The Premiership side cut loose after the interval, with two tries for David Rees and one each for Phil Christophers and Matt Carrington.

London Irish continued their impressive start to the season with a 71-5 hammering of Valladolid in Spain.

Brendan Venter's men scored 10 tries, with flanker Eddie Halvey grabbing a hat-trick and winger Paul Sackey getting two.

Full-back Jarrod Cunningham kicked nine conversions and a penalty as Irish maintained their 100% record and position at the head of Pool Six.

Saracens' win was even more impressive, a competition record 113-3 triumph over Bologna in Pool Eight at Vicarage Road.

They scored 17 tries in total, with winger Darragh O'Mahony collecting four in 15 second-half minutes.

Hooker Matt Cairns scored a hat-trick and Kieran Roques and Richard Haughton got two each.

Jannie de Beer landed 13 conversions.

Saturday's action

Former rugby league star Henry Paul made a stunning union debut, helping himself to 28 points as Gloucester beat Caerphilly 98-14 in Pool Seven on Saturday.

Paul made his scoring mark with a try, 10 conversions and a penalty.

James Forrester and James Simpson-Daniel both went in for hat-tricks of tries, with stand-in skipper Jake Bower touching down twice before retiring from the action after an hour.

The Welsh part-timers hit back with a couple of consolation tries in the second half from Holo Taufahema and substitute Andrew Jacobs.

Sale moved to the top of Pool Four with a hard-fought 33-30 victory at Connacht.

They ran in one try more than the Galway side with Bernard Jackman, Richard Wilks, Peter Anglesea and replacement Andy Titterrell scoring the tries.

Neath bagged their second win in Pool Five, Lee Jarvis kicking five penalties and a conversion as they beat Bourgoin 27-20.

Colomiers wingers inspired them to a crushing 74-12 victory at Italian side Petrarca in Pool Two.

Left-winger Julien Arias helped himself to four tries and Vincent Thomas cruised over for a hat-trick.

In Pool Three, Italian's Overmach Parma overwhelmed French side Beziers 41-29 even though the visitors fought back well in the second half.

Dax blew Italians L'Aquila aside 41-29 in Pool Six.

Friday's games

Ebbw Vale spoiled Montauban's 100 per cent record in Pool One on Friday night as the Frenchmen came unstuck 16-5 at Eugene Cross Park

Wing Gareth Cull claimed all of the Steelmen's points, lacking only a drop goal for a 'full house' after scoring an early try, adding the conversion and kicking three penalties.

Montauban claimed a consolation try in the 70th minute through replacement outside-half Bastien Beyret, after Vale had been reduced to 14 men when Neil McKim was sin-binned.
