Parker Pen Shield review: round one

Luke Smith maintained his 100% kicking record at Vicarage Road as Saracens cruised to a 34-14 victory over pool eight rivals Bordeaux in the Parker Pen Shield.

The South African has yet to miss a kick in three games on the ground, and he also scored his first two tries for Sarries on the way to 29 points.

Smith kicked two penalties and converted Darragh O'Mahony's try from the touchline as the hosts made their forward superiority count.

Smith then scored his maiden try for the club, crossing under the posts after Richard Hill and Tim Horan had opened up the French defence.

He doubled his tally on the stroke of half-time and converted the try to make it 27-0 to Saracens at the break.

Bordeaux finally put themselves on the board three minutes after the break through winger Sebastien Kuzbik's try.

Sebastien Laloo missed the conversion, but he chipped away at Sarries' lead with three penalties before Saracens had the final word.

Prop Luke Harbut was driven over for his first try for the club, and Smith inevitably added the points.

Sale rested several players against Roma, but were still far too strong for the Italians, with Samoan Apollo Perelini crossing three times.

Richard Wilks and Steve Hanley scored a brace of tries apiece for the Mancunians in their 93-0 victory.

But the gloss was taken off the pool four win, with props Les Bone and Stuart Tuner picking up injuries.

Gloucester's 34-15 win at home to La Rochelle in pool seven owed much to French fly half Ludovic Mercier.

He contributed 19 points in a game that saw four players, including three from La Rochelle, sent to the bin.

Also in pool seven, Caerphilly suffered a scare against GR.A.N Parma, trailing 17-15 to the Italians at the break before running out 41-30 winners.

Gareth Jones, Mark Workman and Luke Richards all crossed for second-half tries to spare Caerphilly's blushes.
