Winning the Grand National should be a prevailing memory for any jockey.

Sadly, Tony Dobbin's victory in 1997 was overshadowed by the bomb scare which forced the race to be postponed for 48 hours until the following Monday.

But he won the race in some style, romping home by 25 lengths on Lord Gyllene.

Dobbin, born in Downpatrick, began his flat race apprenticeship under the guidance of Jonjo O'Neill in 1988.

He further enhanced his reputation when he rode to victory on Dizzy in the Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle at the 1994 Cheltenham Festival.

His performances suitably impressed Gordon Richards, owner of the Greystoke stables in Cumbria, who hired Dobbin as a stable jockey.

The Ulsterman finished the 1993/4 season as leading conditional with 45 winners.

The 1995/96 season proved to be another successful one, this time riding 67 winners.

He then won the 1994 Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup on One Man before being jocked off in favour of Richard Dunwoody.

Dobbins is now a regular rider for Nicky Richards, who took over the licence at Greystoke following the death of his father Gordon.
