![]() | Roddick leads new power generation ![]() Roddick celebrates his win over Michael Chang By BBC Sport Online's Alex Perry at Roland Garros Andy Roddick endeared himself to the Paris crowds late on Wednesday night when he beat former champion Michael Chang in the fifth set. As the match reached its climax, Roddick somehow held off an injury which seemed to be giving him trouble in just standing up. A-Rod, as he is known, is the young star American tennis has been looking for to take over from the generation of Chang, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Roddick, still only 18, has already won back-to-back tournaments this year in Atlanta and Houston, and owes no little amount of his success to his incredible serve.
It's no surprise then to find that A-Rod leads the way when it comes to serving speed, with two of his rockets registering an incredible 211kmh - that's 131 mph in old money. In fact, there were probably many more which were faster, but only serves which actually land in play count. Not far behind are Argentine Mariano Zabaleta and Aussie Wayne Arthurs, who have both smashed down serves at 208kmh, while Britain's Tim Henman comes in at 16th with an impressive 200kmh. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Williams sisters lead the way when it comes to the women's game. Rusedski rocket Venus' appearance at Roland Garros was brief, but she still managed to land a 184kmh serve before she was ousted by Barbara Schett. That puts her ahead of many of the men, including Pat Rafter. Serena comes in second along with Australian Alicia Molik - but the two of them are some way behind Venus on 176kmh. Britain's Greg Rusedski holds the ATP record at an unbelievable 239kmh (149mph) - expect some fireworks when he appears on the showcourts for the first time on Thursday. |
