![]() | Clinton takes centre stage ![]() Clinton can't even watch as Agassi falls to Grosjean By BBC Sport Online's Alex Perry at Roland Garros Andre Agassi and Sebastien Grosjean played second fiddle to the crowd for a while during their quarter-final match at Roland Garros on Wednesday. First Bill Clinton took a seat in the stands in the Philippe Chatrier Court and received a standing ovation from the crowd. Then the spectators indulged in a Mexican wave, refusing to stop, despite the protestations of the umpire, as the players took to the court to resume their match. The crowd were doing their best to get Clinton involved in the fun, but he refused to play ball and remained firmly sat in his seat.
While Clinton's presence may have proved inspirational to those who gave him a standing ovation, it did little for compatriot Agassi, who proceeded to fall apart. He surrendered the second and third sets 6-1 after he had sped through the first set with the same scoreline. Whether Clinton could bear Agassi's torment no more, or he knew he was affecting the number three seed's game, the former president decided to leave after the end of the third set. It clearly did the trick for the American, who promptly broke Grosjean in the first game of the fourth set. But, lo and behold, just when things were starting to look good for Agassi, back came Clinton, and once again things began to go pear shaped. Agassi immediately served a double fault and once more lost his serve. Clinton sat with his head in his hands - once the most powerful man in the world, he now sat limply unable to come to the aid of his fellow countryman in need. And before long, it was all over - Agassi once more gave up his serve, and Grosjean served out for a four-set win. |
