The tournament proper may not yet have started, but try telling that to the crowds at Roland Garros.

The final day's practice has seen the concourse brimming with people taking the opportunity to see many of the stars playing warm-up games.

Fans pay FF100 which goes to charity and they are free to wander the grounds.

The practice matches are played on a first-to-nine basis with a tie-break played at 8-8 if necessary.

It's tough to serve and volley all the time on clay - I've got to remember my technique, and if I do that I can do well

Britain's Greg Rusedski had a useful run-out against Harel Levy of Israel on one of the outer courts.

Levy won the match 9-8 on the tie-break, but nevertheless Rusedski wore his trademark broad grin for most of the match, and seemed happy with his work-out.

Rusedski faces a tough first round match against clay specialist Albert Portas, but the Briton remains confident that he can prevail.

"I've got to mix it up, and change it, and be clever," he said after facing Levy.

"It's tough to serve and volley all the time on clay - I've got to remember my technique, and if I do that I can do well."

The one previous meeting between the two was on the clay courts in Rome where Portas won on two tie-breaks, which suggests it may be a close match.

Marc Rosset at the French Open
Rosset gave helpful tips to Henman
But Portas is on form after winning the recent Masters Series event in Hamburg.

Britain's other main hope Tim Henman practised with Switzerland's Marc Rosset and afterwards spoke about his first-round opponent Thomas Behrend.

"He's come through the qualifiers, so he's obviously in good form," said Henman.

"And he beat Cecil Mamiit 6-0 6-2 in qualifying so he must be a decent player."

Henman also explained that Rosset had told him to watch out as the Swiss had himself recently suffered a defeat at the hands of Behrend.

Henman has never faced Behrend, who is something of a journeyman and is yet to win a match at Roland Garros.

But Henman must beware as the 26-year-old Brazilian born German plays his best tennis on clay, and is clearly playing well at the moment.
