Imran consoles Pakistan

Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan has attempted to boost the team's morale after a humiliating first Test defeat to England at Lord's.

According to current captain Waqar Younis, Khan reckons Pakistan are capable of a turnaround in the second and final Test at Old Trafford.

"He told us to stick at it," captain Waqar Younis said.

"He said we could still come back in the second test and that we had not been able to practise much before the game."

Pakistan lost on Sunday by an innings and nine runs at the ground where they won previously in 1992 and 1996.

However, the visitors' captain was quick to point out that the defeat had prompted no harsh words in the dressing room after the match, and praised England's performance.

"The senior players will just have to talk it out," he said.

"We are very disappointed but there are no excuses.

"We played badly, we batted badly and we bowled badly, while England did the opposite.

"Their bowling and catching was extraordinary, particularly Andrew Caddick - they kept on putting the ball in the right place and we kept on nicking it."

Confident return

Younis also defended the team selection after leaving out off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed at Lords.

"I think we picked the right team because it didn't really spin at all. We just didn't apply ourselves."

The second Test begins at Old Trafford on 31 May, before Pakistan compete in a triangular one-day series with England and Australia.

"I don't know much about the wicket since we haven't played there since 1992," Waqar added.

"I have been hearing it might turn and we have got two good spinners."
