First Test, Lord's: England 391 all out v Pakistan 115-4 (close of play), day three

England are in command of the first Test match after an impressive batting and bowling display at Lord's on Saturday.

They reached 391 all out, with special praise for captain Nasser Hussain (64), Alec Stewart (44) and debutant Ian Ward (39) who held the innings together.

Then Somerset bowler Andrew Caddick had a brilliant bowling spell when he took three wickets for 26 runs in 10 overs.

Pakistan were 115-4 when play was abandoned because of bad light - still 276 runs behind England with two days left to play.

They need 127 more runs to avoid the follow-on.

England though were dealt a huge blow with the news that captain Nasser Hussain will miss the rest of this Test and the Old Trafford one with a broken thumb.

Hussain's right thumb was fractured when he was hit by a ball from Shoaib Akhtar, one of the fastest bowlers in the world.

Alec Stewart has resumed the captaincy for this Test.

Resuming on 254-4, Pakistan gained an early breakthrough when night-watchman Ryan Sidebottom was out in the third over without adding to the overnight score.

Hussain, resuming on 53, played a brilliant innings and together with Stewart put England firmly in the driving seat.

Hood-winked

Hussain batted on bravely with his injury but succumbed to Azhar Mahmood's bowling for 64, caught by wicketkeeper Rashid Latif.

Stewart soon followed after a cameo 44.

He had been living dangerously for a number of overs.

He could have no complaints as Akhtar hood-winked him with a slower ball and he was out plum lbw.

Dominic Cork and Ward then kept the scoreboard ticking before and after lunch.

Cork was out for 25 when he slashed Wasim Akram's ball to backward point Younis Khan.

Andrew Caddick added another five runs, before Mahmood's inswinging yorker claimed him.

Ward was edging nearer to a debut half-century but his innings, and England's ended, when he skied a catch to Abdur Razzaq.

Azhar Mahmood was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, claiming his best ever bowling figures with 4 wickets for 50 runs.

But England immediately hit back with Caddick dismissing opener Salim Elahi for a duck.

And he followed that up with the wickets of Inzamam-ul-Haq and Abdur Razzaq.

Darren Gough chipped in for the other wicket when dangerman Saeed Anwar was enticed into hitting a wide ball to leave Pakistan struggling.

However Yousuf Youhana and Younis Khan took the fight to England and took Pakistan into triple figures very quickly, capitalising on some nervous bowling by debutant Sidebottom.
