A brilliant innings of 80 by Graham Thorpe helped England amass an impressive 254 for four wickets on the second day of the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's.

Thorpe was well supported by Nasser Hussain but fell just four overs before the close of play, caught by Abdur Razzaq after pulling a short ball from Waqar Younis.

Hussain was not to be outdone, claiming his half-century off 146 balls in 221 minutes, and finished the day with nightwatchman Ryan Sidebottom making his Test debut.

Azhar Mahmood starred for Pakistan with two wickets for 19 runs, with Abdur Razzaq and the recalled Shoaib Akhtar both causing trouble for the English batsmen.

Following the wash-out on the first day, Michael Atherton and Marcus Trescothick looked hungry for runs in the opening stages but it was Razzaq who first struck half an hour before lunch.

Trescothick looked to drive forward off the lively seamer but edged low to Mahmood in the gully after a stylish 36 runs.

Mahmood was involved again after the interval as he grabbed the first of his two wickets with Michael Vaughan joining Trescothick in the pavilion.

Vaughan played a loose shot on the legside and after flicking the ball into the gloves of Rashid Latif for 32 runs, he trudged off the pitch without waiting for the umpire's decision.

Rollercoaster ride

Waqar and Wasim Akram were unable to take advantage of the early cloudy conditions as England worked hard to contend with the pace and variety offered by Akhtar.

Atherton had looked comfortable for much of his innings and will be disappointed with the way he lost his wicket.

Pakistan regained the initiative in the afternoon as England's opener was bowled by Azhar Mahmood for 42, allowing the ball to slip through his previously faultless defence.

After winning the toss Waqar may be regretting the decision not to include the spinning skills of Saqlain Mushtaq.

If Friday's rollercoaster ride, packed with brilliant batting and shrewd bowling, is anything to go by, these two Tests between England and Pakistan should be nothing but full of entertainment.
