England will boast an all-pace attack for the first Test against Pakistan after they allowed spinner Robert Croft to play for his county on Wednesday.

The Glamorgan off-spinner was permitted to leave the squad to drive to Old Trafford and play in Glamorgan's championship match against Lancashire.

Mathhew Hoggard, the Yorkshire fast bowler not originally included in the squad, was retained after training with England on Tuesday.

He had previously been sidelined with a side strain, but could now be in contention for a Test call-up.

The pitch at Lord's is expected to offer assistance to seam bowlers for the first Test against Pakistan which starts on Thursday.

All-rounder Craig White faces a fitness test on his back strain.

If he fails to pass his examination England will face a straight choice between Yorkshire pair Ryan Sidebottom and Hoggard for the final place in their attack.

England trained indoors on Wednesday after heavy rain ruled out any possibility of using the nets.

But they are unlikely to name their final line-up until Thursday morning to allow White every chance to prove his fitness.

Squad: Nasser Hussain (Essex), Michael Atherton (Lancs), Marcus Trescothick (Somerset), Graham Thorpe (Surrey), Alec Stewart (Surrey), Michael Vaughan (Yorks), Ian Ward (Surrey), Craig White (Yorks), Dominic Cork (Derbys), Andrew Caddick (Somerset), Darren Gough (Yorks), Ryan Sidebottom (Yorkshire), Matthew Hoggard (Yorskshire).
