White's injury D-day

Craig White will have a fitness test on Wednesday to decide if his sore back is up to bowling against Pakistan.

The Yorkshire all-rounder has a back problem which has been troubling him since the tour of Sri Lanka and he was unable to bowl without discomfort in Tuesday's net session.

England take on Pakistan in the first Test of the summer at Lord's on Thursday but White is a rated as a serious doubt.

He told BBC Sport Online: "I've tried to bowl and the back's a bit stiff.

"I'll see how I pull up on Wednesday. I'll have a bit of a bowl and decide from there."

The 31-year-old has become a key member of the side since being awarded a central contract last year, a surprise decision according to some observers.

White scored 178 runs, including a Test best of 93 in Lahore, and took nine wickets during the winter tour to Pakistan, where England won 1-0.

His absence would increase the chances of Yorkshire team-mate Ryan Sidebottom making his Test debut.

Another Yorkshireman, Darren Gough, will be winning his 50th cap.

Pakistan in confident mood

"Back in 1991-92 I never thought I would get one Test. I was stuck in county cricket and couldn't get in the Yorkshire side. I've worked hard at my game and now I'm reaping the rewards.

"The 50th appearance is a big achievement for me when you consider the injuries I've suffered," said Gough.

The Pakistan squad also trained at the home of cricket on Tuesday.

Their main concern is the lack of form shown by batsmen Inzamam-ul Haq and Yousuf Youhana so far on tour.

But coach Richard Pybus is confident they will rise to the occasion.

"Inzamum's such a key figure in our batting and I think he'll be fine. These are experienced Test players and guys like 'Inzi' know when to turn it on.

"I don't think he's got any concerns himself so from the coaching side, if the player is confident, I am happy. Players of their quality are confident in themselves."
