Pakistan's openers enjoyed a productive time at the crease against Kent in Canterbury in preparation for the first Test against England.

Experienced left-hander Saeed Anwar led the way with a bristling double century, while Saleem Elahi provided solid, but more circumspect support.

The pair are likely to open the batting for Pakistan at Lord's and more than made the most of their last game before the Test.

Resuming at 41, they took the score on to 307 before Anwar fell whereupon the tourists delared six runs behind the home side.

On a batsman friendly surface, Kent reached 94 for three in their second innings, a lead of 100.

David Fulton made a composed 40 before falling to all-rounder Abdir Razzaq, while Saqlain Mushtaq had Ed Smith stumped off the last ball of the day.

A largely inexperienced Kent attack rarely troubled the tourists.

The left-handed Anwar gave only one half chance. On 83 he sliced Ben Trott hard and low into the gully, where Robert Key failed to hang on to a difficult catch.

His next scoring stroke was a splendid straight six off slow left-armer Min Patel.

That towering blow took Anwar to his highest score for Pakistan since his 123 off Sri Lanka in Galle last June and gave England evidence that his form is coming together at just the right time.

He finally fell to Kent's Danish seamer Amjad Khan for 201. His runs occupied only 230 balls and he hit 27 fours and five sixes.

Elahi was left six short of his century by the declaration. His 94 came in 197 balls with ten fours.

Pakistan's assistant coach Darryl Foster said of Anwar's double ton: "It was a great two hundred and it was the perfect leader you could have before a Test match.

"You couldn't ask for much more.

"It was a very big confidence boost for him and the Pakistan team to know that they have one of their top batsmen in such good nick with the Test coming up.

"It is a marvellous pitch and we have had some excellent batting conditions and now on the final day some of the other batters can have a hit."
