![]() | Gloucs relish Lord's 'scrap' ![]() Barnett hopes to give Gloucestershire a flying start Gloucestershire batsman Kim Barnett is hoping there will be something in the Lord's wicket for the bowlers when they take on Surrey in Saturday's B&H Cup final. The 40-year-old veteran believes a flat pitch would favour Surrey, who bat a long way down the order. "They have got so much flair that if it becomes a batting paradise on Saturday they could be dangerous and capable of getting a big score," he explained. "If they get off to a flier, they can do anything and they're confident enough to have a go. That's your danger. "But if it gets to be a bit of a scrap and the ball move s around - and fielding and running between the wickets is an issue - then it will bring us more into things. That's what our guys thrive on." Gloucestershire won five one-day trophies in the last two seasons, but their aura of invincibility was shattered when they lost by three runs to Durham in the C&G Trophy earlier this week.
They could, however, point to the absence of key players including opener Tim Hancock and seam bowlers Jonathan Lewis and Mike Smith. "Ideally you would want to take on Surrey with your full contingent, but everyone who has come into the squad over the last three years has done an excellent job," said Barnett. "To miss Hancock, with whom I have enjoyed a very good partnership, Smith and Lewis is a big thing, and it will be a challenge for us. "But then we thought Yorkshire, on their pitch, and against their bowlers, in the semi-finals was going to be a severe test. "Again we were a little bit depleted and we came through. There is no reason why we can't come through this one." It will be sixth successive Lord's final in which Barnett has appeared. Prior to joining Gloucestershire, he played for Derbyshire in the 1998 NatWest Trophy final. "I'm playing as well as I have done for two or three years. My fitness is better than it has been for some time. "I had a knee operation last September and that has helped," Barnett added. |
