Caerphilly surprise the doubters

Caerphilly 31 Glasgow Caledonians 13

Caerphilly ran out comfortable winners, largely thanks to an excellent display from fly-half Luke Richards.

The Castlemen got off to a dream start, scoring the first try in this season's league campaign after only 23 seconds.

Watkins ran strongly to put fellow flanker Gareth Jones over in the corner, but Richards could not convert.

Glasgow came back immediately and only a strong shoulder charge from Roddy Boobyer prevented James Craig going over.

When Caerphilly were penalised, Craig Chalmers - one of the eight Scottish internationals in the Glasgow side - put over the kick.

But Caerphilly registered a second try direct from a line-out.

Skipper Nathan Jones secured possession and transferred to Mark Workman for the ex-Newport lock to crash over.

Tight unit

This time Richards was able to add the extra points before slotting another penalty.

Keeping together as a tight unit, the Caerphilly pack pressurised the visitors into conceding yet another penalty and Richards made it 21-6 with another good kick.

It came as no surprise when David Hawkins burst through a hesitant Scottish defence to make the game totally safe for Caerphilly.

Richards converted and his fourth penalty made Scottish heads drop even further.

However, Glasgow salvaged some late respect with a try scored by replacement forward Gordon Simpson, Chalmers converting.

It was an impressive display of teamwork from Caerphilly, who had been written off by many before the season got underway.
