Swansea 54-10 Glasgow Caledonians

Swansea sealed their position as Welsh-Scottish League champions as they accounted for Glasgow Caledonians at St Helens on Saturday, while closest challengers Cardiff slumped to defeat at Llanelli.

The home side cut the Scots apart with eight tries despite missing a number of key players, including Lion Mark Taylor.

The All Whites had too many big guns for Glasgow. Geraint Lewis led the charge with two tries, including a 70-metre interception score.

But their driving force was scrum-half Sililo Martens, who rattled the visitors with a series of bone-crunching tackles and also claimed a fine try.

Swansea coach John Plumtree was delighted at taking the Welsh-Scottish League crown, but felt that they had missed opportunities during the season for even greater success.

"I've got a mixture of emotions at the moment, I guess," Plumtree said. "Relief really with the expectation but very happy.

"But Europe is the benchmark. We want to be as successful as possible in Europe but it's an unpredictable competition.

Strength

"In one way it's comforting that Stade Francais and Leicester, both sides that we lost to, are in the final but there's still the disappointment that we didn't go as far as we wanted."

Swansea had been forced to draft in Simon Mitchell from London Welsh after injuries to their three regular hookers.

Mitchell did a fine job in his emergency role and received an ovation when he was substituted towards the end.

Winning try: Steve Winn crosses for Swansea
It was 26-3 at the break after a storming opening half from the Swansea that saw them claim four tries.

Acting skipper Colin Charvis put them on the road to victory when he swept across in the second minute following good line-out work by Lewis.

Lewis then went across from a close-range scrum, before Steve Winn and Matthew Robinson claimed tries, Robinson notching his 24th of the campaign.

Glasgow tried to rouse themselves and managed a second-half score from replacement Andrew Henderson but they could not live with the Whites' extra pace and strength.

Lewis, Martens, Shaun Payne and David Weatherley crossed for tries to kill the visitors off.
