Newport 31-22 Caerphilly

Newport skipper Gary Teichmann scored one of his team's three tries in his farewell appearance at Rodney Parade.

Teichmann will be returning home to South Africa at the end of the season after two years in Wales.

The big number eight scored the most popular try of the game after 61 minutes following a storming burst by outstanding Newport prop Rod Snow.

Newport's other touchdowns came from Adrian Garvey and Matt Pini.

Rousing welcome

Outside-half Scott Mitchell kicked four penalties and two conversions.

But adventurous Caerphilly almost spoiled the party and were leading 22-21 as the game went into its final stages.

The visitors' tries came from Roger Bidgood, Sean Marshall and Andrew Jacobs.

Outside-half Luke Richards capped a good display by kicking a penalty and two conversions.

Teichmann was given a rousing welcome as he took the field accompanied by a young mascot waving the Newport flag.

Final fling

Playing into a stiff wind, Newport quickly swept into the attack and led 6-0 after seven minutes thanks to two short-range penalties by Mitchell.

Newport stretched their lead to 11-0 midway through the first half when Garvey grabbed a try courtesy of a superb line out take by Teichmann.

But Caerphilly bounced back with a 30th minute unconverted try by former Newport centre Bidgood.

But with Teichmann celebrating his final fling, the Black and Ambers rallied to make it his day.
