Pontypridd bounced back from their recent disappointing spell to record a convincing Welsh-Scottish League win over visitors Glasgow Caledonian on Wednesday night.

But despite notching up their ninth victory, Ponty's hopes of finishing in the top five and gaining a place in next season's Heineken Cup are remote even if they win their three remaining games.

Nevertheless, Pontypridd coach Richie Collins was delighted with his players' performance: "The manner of the win was the most pleasing thing to me.

"We played some good rugby tonight and for the last half-dozen games that has deserted us."

After a fast and furious start, outside-half Tommy Hayes put Glasgow ahead with a 28-metre penalty against the run of play in the sixth minute.

Minutes later Jason Lewis broke clear to cross under the posts for Ponty but the score was disallowed for a forward pass.

High stakes: Ponty's Richard Field is collared by Glenn Metcalfe
The home side continued to pile on the pressure and drew level through a Brett Davey penalty after a high tackle on flanker Richard Field. Davey then edged Ponty ahead with another penalty.

As the half progressed Ponty continued to control the match and a charge down by Se'oa Vunipola near halfway saw the hooker feed wing Richard Johnston and he sprinted clear for a fine try.

Pressure

In the closing stages of the half, the Welsh outfit struck again when superb handling let in outside half Ceri Sweeney for another fine touchdown, which Davey converted.

Near the interval the visitors cut the deficit to 18-8 with a try from wing Rory Kerr but right on time Davey slotted over another penalty for Ponty.

On the restart, the home side started with a bang when a break by No 8 Michael Owen into the 22 was passed to Sweeney and he sprinted over for his second try.

"I was pleased with Sweeney," Collins added. "He's been chomping at the bit to get back into the set-up and he took his chances well."

Glasgow got their act together and after a spell of pressure wing James McLaren crossed for a try before Davey slotted over his fourth goal for Ponty.

In injury time Davey kicked his fifth penalty, Jonathan Evans crossed for a try that Davey converted, while Hayes' late try for the visitors proved to be no more than a consolation effort.
