Shane Howarth led rampant Newport to an impressive victory that effectively ended Bridgend's title aspirations at a packed Brewery Field.

The former Wales full-back dictated affairs smoothly and amassed 20 points as Newport subdued the Ravens.

The Black and Ambers' victory owed much to their juggernaut pack, in which skipper Gary Teichmann and Wales lock Ian Gough were immense.

Bridgend could not compete up front and, starved of possession, were unable to make use of their match-winning three-quarters.

Newport scored the first of four fine tries when winger Matt Mostyn crossed for his 13th league touchdown of the season.

The visitors, using a solid forward platform, added a penalty by Howarth before an unusually lack-lustre Craig Warlow landed the first of a penalty hat-trick for Bridgend.

Howarth reached 250 league points with his second penalty as things went from bad to worse for the outgunned hosts.

Then Howarth slipped through some slipshod defending to cross for a splendid solo score that put Newport firmly on the victory trail.

Although Mostyn denied rival Mike Peters in a rare Bridgend attack, Newport reasserted control through a fine score by flanker Jason Forster, after Aussie centre Jason Jones-Hughes had made the running.

Forster's joy was all the greater for scoring against his old club.

The conversion from Howarth sealed Bridgend's fate as Newport led 25-6 at the interval.

Bridgend competed more effectively after the break, but could not break Newport's vice-like grip on the game.

The visitors defence was rock solid and Howarth's third penalty merely confirmed the visitors' resolve.

Newport crowned an unstoppable show with a late converted pushover score by Teichmann.
