![]() | Garvey to be cited ![]() Caerphilly had no answer to flying wing Matt Mostyn Caerphilly 8-53 Newport Caerphilly team manager Gordon Pritchard has confirmed his club will cite Newport prop Adrian Garvey after two alleged incidents in Saturday's league clash. "We don't take the decision lightly, but the fact it happened twice from the same player formed our decision - this was particularly ugly," Pritchard said. Caerphilly hooker Justin Hughes was left with a bleeding nose after an incident in the 66th minute allegedly involving Garvey. Newport won the match convincingly with Matt Mostyn claiming a hat-trick of tries as the Black and Ambers moved to second in the table. Shane Howarth, who himself racked up 21 points, put the visitors ahead after only a minute of play in this hastily arranged fixture following the postponement of Wales' Six Nations clash with Ireland. "I thought we played very well," Allan Lewis, the Newport coach, said. "We kept the ball in hand and showed a lot of continuity." Caerphilly went over the top at the very first ruck to allow Howarth to put Newport in front, although Chris John made it 3-3 soon afterwards.
Then a well-timed inside pass from Howarth saw Mostyn coming in on a splendid angle to sprint over the try line without being touched. Howarth converted and Newport were 13-3 in front. They extended their lead when No 8 Joe Powell secured good possession and South African prop Adrian Garvey plunged over for Newport's second try, although it went unconverted. Coasted Geraint Evans gave the ball inside when he seemed to have a clear run for the line as Caerphilly struggled to make an impact. Powell was the scorer of Newport's third try but any one of five players could have gone over, so huge was the overlap created. Mostyn scorched over for his second try before half-time and set up Howarth for another score as Newport coasted to the interval 39-3 in front. Evans looked as if he was going to make the most of a Roddy Boobyer grub kick on the resumption but it was ruled that he had failed to exert downward pressure. Taking a pass from David Hawkins, Evans did succeed in crossing in the corner soon afterwards for Caerphilly's only try of the afternoon. After a quiet third quarter, Newport got back into try-scoring mode when Mostyn raced over for his third of the match. Both teams made wholesale changes in the closing stages. One of Newport's replacements, Dale Burn, crossed for the last try of the afternoon and another, Scott Mitchell, fired over the conversion. "In the second half we lost our way," coach Lewis added. "Our set-piece wasn't as good as it should have been. "They came back and played very well and defended well, with the result that it was a bit of a scrappy second half." Caerphilly: Try: G. Evans.
