Buxton awaiting Newport call
Peter Buxton
Peter Buxton has recovered from his ankle injury
Newport and Pontypridd return to Welsh-Scottish League action at Rodney Parade this Saturday. Both clubs are desperate to finish in the top five and claim a Heineken Cup spot for next season.

Newport, currently in third, look better set but with only three of their remaining eight matches at Rodney Parade, must make their home advantage count.

"Heineken Cup qualification has always been the number one priority for the season," said Newport captain Gary Teichmann. "We are in a good position to reach that goal, but a victory over Pontypridd is vital. They are one of our main challengers."

Damaged

Newport's cause could be helped by the return to fitness of Peter Buxton. The former England U21 flanker damaged an ankle against Ebbw Vale and has been out of action since 23 December.

However, the former Moseley player came through a 30-minute outing for the Black and Amber U21s in their 66-13 win against Caerleon last Saturday and should be available for selection.

Another flanker, openside Jason Forster, has also recovered from an ankle injury and will be fit to return against Pontypridd having missed the last match against Bath.

Recalled

Wales lock Ian Gough is having daily treatment for a thigh injury suffered against England.

Pontypridd also have their injury concerns and fullback Brett davey is definitely ruled out with eye socket damage, as is lock Brent Cockbain with a groin strain. Both injuries were suffered against Caerphilly just over a week ago.

Another player who will not figure is wing Alan Hunte, who has now been recalled from his loan period by Warrington, in readiness for the commencement of the new Superleague season.
