Shorney brings Vale sweet relief

Rhys Shorney broke Ebbw Vale's losing streak
Ebbw Vale 14-10 Glasgow Caledonians

Centre Rhys Shorney was the toast of Ebbw Vale after grabbing a 73rd-minute winning try against Glasgow Caledonians.

Vale seemed to be sliding to their fifth consecutive Welsh-Scottish League defeat when they trailed 10-7 with time running out.

But Shorney glided over the Eugene Cross Park mud to score his try near the posts, with replacement fly-half Jason Strange adding the conversion to seal the victory.

The last time the home side had a League win was against the other Scottish side, Edinburgh Reivers, on 5 December. The win will now give Vale hope that they can move away from the relegation zone.

Clawed back

Glasgow, fielding a string of internationals who will face Wales next week, did most of the early attacking before home hooker Leyton Phillips finally forced his way over for the opening try after 20 minutes.

Impressive fly-half Shaun Connor, who had figured in a number of promising raids, kicked the easy conversion.

His opposite number, Tommy Hayes, clawed back the deficit with a short-range penalty in the 32nd minute to make the interval score 7-3.

Nine minutes after the restart Glasgow were rewarded for some adventurous play when Hayes cleverly put centre James McLaren clean through for a try near the posts which Hayes also converted.
